A church has stood on the site since before 1066; the first mention of a rector in the parish is 1262. Much of the present church was dedicated by the Bishop of Exeter in 1334 with various alterations to the chancel and north and south aisles. The building underwent a major renovation during the 1880s when several of the windows were introduced, though the stained glass windows are later additions. High up on the north side of the interior are several clerestory windows – these are unusual in this area
